Aesop's Fables

Although a short read, and quite simple in language, this book or collection should be something that all writers are familiar with.  It was interesting to see where phrases such as 'counting your chickens before they are hatched', a colloquial saying that although I knew the meaning of, I truly didn't understand it until I saw it's origins.  My copy has many highlighted sections I hope to remember when looking for a metaphor or two in my future writing.
